8 Abandoned Train Stations Around the World

Bindu swetha
Few beautiful railway stations across the world that were once fully operational and lively have now been forgotten to crumble and slowly rotting! These stations are now either a source of 'ghostly stories' while few others have grabbed people's attention and are turning into tourist spots.

Canfranc International Railway Station, Spain

A train derailment in the 1970s (train crashed into the bridge) along with war and financial crisis, left the once second-largest train station in Europe, to decay. The main building of the station has 365 windows and 156 doors!

Michigan Central Train Station, Detroit

This former depot for the Michigan Central Railroad that was once the symbol of Cork Town's pride was left empty in the 1980s after the Amtrak stopped using this station. However, with Ford Motor Company buying this property, there's hope of restoration!

Anhalter Bahnhof, Berlin

A new facade was opened in 1880 and two zinc sculptures, Day and Night, were installed on either side of the clock above the entrance.
Earlier this station was the Berlin terminus for the route that went to Jüterbog, Dessau and beyond. With the invention of S-Bahn and the bombing during the Second World War, this station was left abandoned in 1952.

Porte des Lilas-Cinéma Station, Paris

Though the station was left unused in 1939, it is used in several movies as film sets such as the 'Amélie' and the 'Good Time'. This is the only station located on the Paris Portes that has two separate subway lines.

Kacov Station, Czech Republic

Though left empty and neglected, this scenic railway station in the Central Bohemia region serves as a beautiful attraction! It is also used as a location in films like the Dark Blue World.

Gudauta, Abkhazia

Lack of funds led to a shutdown of this historic station in Abkhazia in the early 1990s. However, in 2018, the citizens of Abkhazia decided to renovate the station as it's an important architectural marvel in the place.

Helensburgh Railway Station, Australia

Built between 1884 to 1886 to the service coalfields and farms, this station has seven abandoned tunnels that attract ghost hunters and rail enthusiasts.
This tunnel was earlier closed in 1920 and was used for mushroom farming! It is said that a miner, Robert Hails, was killed by a steam train in 1985 that serves as fodder for all the 'ghost stories'!

Monte Romano, Italy

Discontinued in 1961, the Monte Romano station was built in the late 19th century to connect Rome's sea port on the Orte-Capranica-Civitavecchia line. It is now used by mountaineers and walkers!
