Witnessing the shimmering, majestic lights dancing in the night sky over the glacier is a sight to behold. Grab the opportunity and travel to Alaska’s nearby areas. Make sure you plan your trip from mid September to late April.
Fairbanks
Located just below the Aurora Oval, it is the best place to gaze at the Northern Lights. Hike up to the Murphy, Ester Dome, Chena Hot Springs.
Denali National Park
Witness the auroras from Denali (Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America with the least light pollution.
Nome
The time Auroras are visible here, coincides with the 2-week long Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Since the town is isolated, you will find a spot quickly.
Juneau
Watch the shimmering light bands aboard a cruise sailing in the sea where the lights perfectly compliment the waterline of the sea.
Coldfoot
Although the most under-rated place, Coldfoot is (like Fairbanks) located at the Aurora Oval, offering one of the best views of the Northern Lights.
Barrow
Just look out of your window to grab the rewarding view of lights floating above the frozen sea.
Talkeetna
Even though it’s not a popular place to spot the solar flares. A guided tour will turn your odds into even. Also, this place offers the view for free.
Anchorage
Drive outside this south-central city of Alaska and you’ll see the lights a bit lower on the horizon.
