America has hundreds of airports, some of them are even ranked among the largest and the busiest airports in the world. Here’s a list of the largest ones in the US, in terms of area.

Denver International Airport
America in terms of area, it spans around 33,532.2 acres. It has six runways but the 16,000 ft long 16R/34L is the longest runway in the country for public use.
The airport has been caught up in various controversies regarding the artwork, mural and sculptures. It has managed to serve around 64.5 million passengers in 2018, and is the fifth busiest in the continent, thanks to its astronomical size.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

Covering an area of 17,206 acres, it’s the second largest airport in America. The airport has five terminals and has handled 69 million passengers in the fiscal year of 2018.

Orlando International Airport

Founded in 1942, it was originally an army airfield but is now the busiest airport in Florida which served around 47.7 million passengers in 2018 and the third largest in the US occupying a total area of 13,302 acres.

Washington Dulles International Airport
Named after the 52nd Secretary of State, Foster Dulles, it covers an area of 12,000 acres; the location of the airport was picked by President Eisenhower.
The airport was unveiled by President John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 7 of 1962, it’s a prime airport in the metropolitan region of Washington-Baltimore serving around 24 million passengers annually.

O'Hare International Airport
Based in Chicago, it occupies around 7,627 acres of land making it the seventh largest in the US. It served a record 83 million passengers in the year of 2018 earning its place as the sixth busiest airport in the world.

San Francisco International Airport
Used as a training and a staging base for the Army Air Corps during WWII, it now covers 5,207 acres and was the largest airport in the continent when it opened in 2000. In 2018, the airport’s passenger traffic reached around 57.7 millions.

John F. Kennedy International Airport
The airport occupies a total area of 5,200 acres.
Opened in 1948 as the New York international Airport, it was renamed as the John F. Kennedy International Airport as a homage to the 35th President of the US post his assassination.
