Smallest Country
With total area of 261 square km, Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest country not only in the Caribbean but also in the Western hemisphere.
Two-Island Country, Divided by Narrows (Channel)
A dual-island country, Saint Kitts and Nevis is divided by a 2-miles (3-kilometre) channel named "The Narrows".
Shape of The Island
Saint Kitts is larger of the two and is almost oval in shape, while the smaller Nevis Island is roughly circular.
Capital City
Basseterre is the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, located in the larger island of Saint Kitts. The quarter of the population of the country lives in the capital city.
Ruled By the British
Discovered by Christopher Columbus, Saint Kitts and Nevis was the first Caribbean island that became a British colony. In fact, the English and French fought over the country for over a hundred years.
In 1782, the island came in complete control of the British and remained so until 1983, when it was declared an independent country.
Population
The total population of Saint Kitts and Nevis is 53,199 (2020). Although it is one country, the people of Saint Kitts are called Kittitians while people of Nevis are called Nevisians.
Today, majority of the population are descendants of the African slaves, although Carib people lived in Saint Kitts and Nevis when Columbus landed on the island.
A Country Formed by Volcanoes
The island has been formed by volcanic eruptions, and there are many volcanic mountains here. All of these volcanoes have been dormant for several centuries and make for great hiking spots.
Economy
Popularly known as Sugar City, sugar plantations were the major source of economy till 2005. Today, many of these plantations have been converted into resorts, and tourism has become the main source of income for Saint Kitts and Nevis.

One of the main reasons that Saint Kitts and Nevis has become a popular holiday destination is because it has a warm climate throughout the year. The minimum temperature does not go beneath 25°C.
White and Black Beaches
Saint Kitts and Nevis is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches on earth. The best part is that the islands have both white and black sand beaches. Black beaches are the result of the volcanic geography of the island.
Green Monkeys
A unique feature of the island is the population of green monkeys. They are the descendants of pets that were brought to the island by the French settlers in the 17th century.

The country celebrates two festivals with lot of pomp. One is the St. Kitts Music Festival, which is hosted at the end of June, while the other is St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival, held during Christmas and New Year.
Delicacy: Goat Water (Stew)
Saint Kitts is popular for its seafood. However, if there is one food that is the highlight of the place, it is the Goat water. It is a stew made with goat’s meat and neck bones.
