Amazing Things to Do and See in Ulaanbaatar, the Capital of Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar is not only the capital of Mongolia but also the coldest capital in the world. It has some of the most amazing things to do and see for any adventurous thrill seeker.

1. Sukhbaatar Square

Also called the Chinggis Square, it is the central square within the city. It features a statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar riding his horse after whom this square is named. He was the ‘Hero of the Revolution’ that helped Mongolia gain independence from China.

2. Genghis Khan Statue Complex

The name you recall when you hear Mongolia is 'Genghis Khan'. A 40 meters tall and giant statue of him riding a horse is the world’s largest equestrian statue, erected at 54 km from the capital 'Ulaanbaatar'.

3. Choijin Lama Monastery

Worth a visit, this monastery has beautiful artifacts and Buddha statues. You will find amazing drawings and little figurines of temples worth your time.

4. Gandan Monastery

This is the largest and the most important monastery in Ulaanbaatar. It was built in the 19th century with Migjid Janraisig Temple - the most important part of Gadan Monastery.

5. National Museum of Mongolia

This museum will help you learn all about Mongolian history and culture. It features the country’s history right from the prehistoric period till date.

6. Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

This is the palace where the 8th Living Buddha and Last King Jebtzun Damba Hutagt VIII or Bogd Khan spent 20 years. The Russians did not destroy this palace for reasons unknown and turned it into a museum.

7. The Zaisan Memorial

Located on a hill in southern part of the city, this features a circular memorial painting. Considered also as a communist-era propaganda monument, it depicts the friendship between Russia and Mongolia.

8. Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs

The Gobi Desert of Mongolia may be a desolate region, but it is an area rich with dino fossils. This museum thus features fossils of protoceratops skulls, full skeleton of Tarbosaurus bataar, and more.

9. Gorkhi Terelj National Park

Beautiful National Park with picturesque landscape, this offers a variety of activities such as horseback riding, rafting and rock climbing. Make sure you have a look at the Khagiin Khar Lake, Turtle Rock, as well as keep an eye for more than 200 species of birds.

10. Spend a Night in a Ger

This traditional nomadic style housing in Mongolia is an experience you should not miss. Try camping and living in the traditional tent in the Gobi Desert. Visit countryside and you will find many families graciously accept travellers into their homes.
Ulaanbaatar is rich with wide variety of amazing things to do and see and hence it's so difficult to summerise them. The Naran Tuul Market (Black Market) to pick up traditional Mongol souvenirs, watching the Tumen Ekh Song & Dance, exploring the Altai Mountains by horseback are just few more wonderful things to do in this capital city of Mongolia.
