Beautiful Islands in Mexico

Island Days, Island Ways...Surf, Sand and Sunny Rays!!
Priyanka Wadhwani
Home to not only inventors, celebrities, cultural events, cuisine and drinks but also long stretches of virgin beaches, numerous white sands, and beautiful coastal resorts, Mexico is different from other countries in the world in many aspects.
The country has lately become a popular tourist destination, thanks to its excellent mix of gorgeous beaches, adventurous activities, tasty cuisine and rich culture. However, Cancun and Cabo are generally much visited, the islands in the region have a lot to offer, too.
Mexico has islands on both the east and the west coast, east ones are for soft beaches, stellar snorkeling, diving, etc. While, the ones on the west are more about the marine and bird life.
Mexico's islands have a wealth of charms to offer, from the languid to the outdoorsy. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, an up-close wildlife experience or a fun tequila-fueled weekend away, Mexico has an island for you. Here, are our few favorite islands.
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is just a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun. It is known for the underwater activities, bustling blocks filled with vendors, restaurants and bars. Visit this one to enjoy quiet, relaxing and much more natural surroundings.
Islas Marietas
Nature lovers, here’s a dreamland for you with a rich marine life, bird populations and biodiversity. If that’s not enough, a mile off the coast are waiting, see blue-footed boobies, sea turtles, dolphins and even whales in winter months. Visit this jaw-dropping Island for your next Instagram story.
Isla Holbox
A great mix of soft beaches, gentle breezes and lots of sunshine is what you get at this sleepy island off the northern tip. Hammocks stretched over the water, lazy days spent on the sand, wooden beach bars, fish restaurants and small boutique hotels are all over the island.
Isla Contoy
There’s a lot to do here; look at the various bird species, have barbecue fish lunch, snag some shade under a beach palapa, or take a dip in the lagoon. Make sure to be in the first 200 visitors to enjoy lush jungle, sugar-sand beaches and crystal clear water.
Cozumel
Famous for its snorkeling and scuba diving sites, this popular island provides easy access to both the underwater sculptures. Visitors can also swim in cenotes, visit pearl and cocoa farms, rent ATVs to explore the island or post up at one of the many beach clubs.
Isla Socorro
This island is known to have unbelievable underwater life, including giant manta rays with wingspans that are up to 5 metres wide, Galapagos sharks, whale sharks and more. Isla Socorro is almost exclusively visited as a water attraction and is an absolute must for divers.
Isla Partida & Isla Espiritu Santo
Separated by a thin channel of water, both these islands are eco-tourism destinations. Wildlife like sea lions, dolphins, whales, pelicans, sea turtles and colorful reef fish are major attractions here.
Isla Janitzio
Ever heard about the Day of the Dead Celebrations? This is what Isla Janitzio is famous for. The island’s cemetery fills with candles as locals hold vigil next to the graves of their deceased loved ones. Visit this cultural and spiritual island which is worth giving a chance.
Isla de Mezcala
Taking you back to the history, this uninhabited island contains a small fortress and was the site for several battles during the War of Independence. This tiny island can be reached by boat from the town of Mezcala.
Isla Tiburón
With a total area of 464 square miles, Isla Tiburón is the largest island in the country. The island is controlled by the Seri tribal government & so hikers and overnight visitors need to apply for permits from the Seri government..
