Maine enjoys the distinction of being the US's northeastern most state. It offers natural paradises, rocky coastline and glorious maritime history. Best of all, it has several beaches worth visiting.
1. Wells Beach
This popular beach is nearby shopping outlets and restaurants. The soft sand beach stretches a mile and a half.
Kayaks and boats are available for the adventurous. Amenities offered are an arcade, charming gift shops, restrooms and a snack bar. Children will enjoy the marshes and tidal pools here.
2. Scarborough Beach State Park
This is a beach acquired for the public with a different regulation and fee structure than several other beaches as it relies solely on the fees for operating.
The attraction boasts of being a top place for swimming in New England because of the warm waters. Umbrellas, boards as well as chairs are available on rent here.
3. Sand Beach Acadia National Park
The popular Sand Beach sits inside the park. Measuring a mere 290 yards, it is a sought after gem of the Mount Desert Island.
Note that this beach is different from the usual beaches. Its sand has been subjected to thousands of years of frequent surf pounding with the result that it is now predominantly made up of tiny shell fragments.
4. Reid State Park
Way back in 1946, a local resident donated this all-season beach to the state government. Here, you can find some of Maine's rarest giant sand dunes.
On offer are magnificent salt marshes, a dream lagoon, beautiful sandy beaches and impressive rocky headlands. Look out for ospreys and bald eagles here.
5. Popham Beach State Park
Remember to go through the Beach Advisory Calendar before you make a trip to this lovely beach. The place is one among the state's rarest geological land-forms which is a good enough reason to pay a visit.
At low tide, you can venture out to the close-by Fox Island. Toilets are available on the beach. However, there aren't any cafes.
6. Pine Point Beach
The exquisite soft sand beach stretches four miles. It is a paradise for people seeking to relax, enjoy the water, indulge in collection of shells and other de-stressing activities.
The local seafood served here tastes amazing. There is ample parking space and restrooms to use. Kayaks as well as beach cruiser bikes are available on rent for the interested.
7. Old Orchard Beach
This old attraction has been open to visitors for over a staggering 170 years. It stretches an impressive seven miles and boasts of New England's sole beachfront amusement park.
The popular tourist paradise has white sand with relatively few stones, perfect for enjoyable barefoot strolls. Facilities are ample here with sunscreen and towels easily available.
8. Ogunquit Beach
Indigenous Americans call the place 'beautiful place by the sea' and the attraction more than justifies the title. Stretching 3.5 miles long, the beach often ranks among the US's best beaches.
The low tide here gives visitors the opportunity to see the beach's pretty rock pools and sandbars. One has to follow the stipulated rules here that make sure the beach stays squeaky clean and enjoyable by all visitors.
9. Higgins Beach
Here, there is a historic shipwreck which the kids will enjoy. The beach is adjacent to a residential neighborhood.
On offer are family friendly attractions, a surfeit of activities and comfortable places to stay. Popular activities here include sunbathing, beach strolls, surfing and others.
