Brookgreen Gardens, South Carolina

South Carolina’s sculpture garden and wildlife preserve is located in the Georgetown County. It is between Waccamaw river and the Atlantic Coast.
Prachi Dharap
Founded in 1932, by Archer Milton Huntington; step-son of Collis Potter Huntington (railroad magnate) and Anna Hyatt Huntington. It features sculptures by Anna, her sister Harriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor, and other American sculptors.

This 9,100-acre property covers four former rice plantations- Oaks, Brookgreen, Laurel Hill, and Springfield along-with forest, marshland and a beach front.

Sculpture Garden

This area was registered in 1978 in the National Register of Historic Places. The Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden features about 1,445 works.

Lowcountry Trail

The trail is a boardwalk which crosses the hillside overlooking the Mainfield - a restored Brookgreen rice plantation. The sculptures on this trail reveal a story of role played in socio-economic system of the Lowcountry Plantation.

Lowcountry Zoo

You can walk through the zoo with a 50-minute guided tour to observe the natural animal behaviour. You can see snakes, alligators, foxes, eagles, egrets, and many more species of wild animals.
The Atlantic Coast side of the Gardens is now leased to South Carolina for Huntington Beach State Park. You can take self guided boat tours along the nature trail to see the longleaf pines, Spanish moss covered oaks, beautiful view of rivers and marshlands.
Choose among the two designated picnic areas or three dining options.

  • Old Kitchen for light refreshments. You can choose indoor seating or relax on the Old Kitchen Porch.
