Melissani Cave is located in Kefalonia island, Greece. It appears as a sinkhole with the Melissani Lake beautifully nestled in it. And guess what! There is a tiny island inside the cave too!
There is a passage of tunnel that will lead you to the cave, and Melissani Lake which is the major attraction of the cave, welcomes you with its beauty.

The boat ride will give you a visual treat, as the cave boasts of stalactite formations which are ancient and give a rustic look. In addition, innumerable trees stand above, encircling you in their beauty.

The highlight of the lake is the color of water, which is aqua turquoise. As observed by many, the lake is strikingly beautiful and appears bejeweled when sun rays fall upon it. So, a bright and a clear sunny day is recommended by most of the visitors, to witness the natural beauty.

Next comes the typical cave atmosphere. The deep and dark portions of the cave will not scare you but will attract all your attention. Thanks to the mossed stalagmites and stalactites hangings, they will intrigue you, and at the same time, please you visually!
Melissani Cave has interesting mythological stories. A nymph called Melissanthi jumped in this lake after god Pan spurned her overtures of love. The lake is hence named after her. Archaeological evidences, and artifacts like lamps, discs and plates were found in 1962 that were reportedly closely related to god Pan and nymph Melissanthi.
