Explore the Historical Beauty of Attica, Greece

Located in central Greece, Attica has many places of interests such as Acropolis of Athens, Parthenon, and a lot to offer its guest. Also known as the Attica peninsula is a part of the City of Athens. The peninsula was of historical importance as it projects into the Aegean Sea, borders Boeotia on the north and Laurion on the south and Megaris on the west.

Athens

It is not only the biggest city of Attica but also the capital of Greece. Historical sites such as the Acropolis, The Parthenon, Ancient Agora, and more are located in Athens.

Marathon

Located 40 km from Athens, Marathon is a famous historical place in Attica. In 490 BC, it was here, the Persians were defeated and the place was marked in history as The Battle of Marathon.  Marathon is also famous for its serene surroundings and the Marathon lake.

Sounion

Sounion is on the south-eastern coast of Attica.  The Temple of Poseidon is situated in this quaint seaside town.

Megara

On the western part of Attica is an ancient town of Megara. Your visit to this ancient city is not complete without a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Megara.

Salamis Island

Close to Megara is Salamis, the largest island of the Saronic Gulf. Mycenean acropolis that was built in the 13th century BC is situated in this island.

Eleusis

This town lies 18 km northwest of Athens and is one of the five sacred cities of Greece.  Eleusis is the place of worship of goddess Demeter. Aeschylus,an ancient Greek tragedian, was born in here.

Aegina

Aegina is an island that houses the ancient temples of Apollo and Aphai. You can plan a  visit to the ruins of these temples.

Port of Piraeus

Close to Athens is a Piraeus,  a small seaport with clean beaches and picturesque fishing taverns. There are ancient ruins here.

Laurium

Laurium is a historical town southeast of Athens. It has a port and a bay that overlooks the island of Makronisos. It has the biggest silver mines of Greece. There is a Archaeological Museum of Lavrion here.
The town has different names like Lavrio, Lavrion and Laureion, so do not get confused with these tricky names.
