New York, the largest city with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world, was founded by the Dutch in 1624. It was then, a commercial trading post and served as the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790. New York City is also the most densely populated city in the United States.

Located in the northeastern United States, New York City lies halfway between Boston and Washington D.C. It has a humid, subtropical climate.
During the British rule, New York City gained importance as a trading port. It witnessed some of the major battles during the American Revolutionary War. In the 1920s, many African Americans migrated to New York City during the Great Migration. Immigration changed New York City in the 19th century.

New York City consists of five boroughs, namely, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. A borough is a different kind of government that looks after the five basic parts of a consolidated city and is represented by a Borough President. The boroughs were created in 1898.

New York City has a mayor-council form of government, wherein the mayor and the councilors are elected to four-year terms.
Bronx is the only one on the U.S. mainland. It is connected to the Manhattan borough by several bridges and tunnels over and under the Harlem River, and three bridges over the East River link Bronx to Queens.
Brooklyn is the most populous borough of New York. It was an independent incorporated city until January 1, 1898. Even today, it has a distinct culture of its own.

Home to the United Nations Headquarters and two large stock exchanges, Manhattan is referred to as the economic and cultural center of the United States. In terms of land area, it is the smallest of New York's five boroughs.
Established in 1683, as one of the original 12 counties of New York, Queens became New York's borough in 1898. Largest in terms of area and second-largest in terms of population, Queens is known to be the world's most ethnically diverse urban area.
It is located in the southernmost part of the city as well as the state of New York. Third-largest in terms of area, Staten is the least populated New York borough. The people there feel neglected by the City government which is why Staten is sometimes known as the "forgotten borough".

New York City was fortunate to host the first United States Congress Assembly and it was in this very city that the United States Bill of Rights was drafted.

New York City is the second largest center for the film industry of the United States. The city houses a collection of 41 very large theaters, collectively known as the Broadway. It is an important center for films, theater, and performing arts.
