7 Fascinating Caves in France with Paintings

France has some of the most spectacular prehistoric cave in the world. The art here in the caves were engraved about 36000 to 12000 years ago.
Cave paintings are a type of parietal art, the term usually implies prehistoric origin. Let's see some of the historical locations in France which are gifted with beautiful cave paintings.
It's a complex of caves near the village of Montignac in southwestern France. After the Second World War, Lascaux was open to the public for several years until 1963.
LASCAUX CAVE
The pictures depict types of animals, including horses, red deer, stags, bovines, felines, and mythical creatures. The 4 young boys - Marcel Ravidat, Gerorges Agniel, Simon Coencas and Jacques Marsal discovered these cave with paintings in the year 1940.
These are are located in the municipality of Payrignac, on the edge of the Dordogne. The visit takes place via a staging using natural scenery.
COUGNAC CAVES
The Grottes de Cougnac are actually two caves. The most important pictures are the rare paintings of ibex and tahr and were painted with local red ochre.
It is located in the heart of the Perigord, between Bergerac and Sarlat in the Dordogne region. The site has more than 250 etchings.
ROUFFIGNAC CAVE
The cave is an extremely popular tourist destination, and has been set up in a very professional manner. They provide electric trains to travel and see paintings inside the caves.
It's a cave near Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in the Dordogne départment of south-west France. It's the last cave containing prehistoric polychrome paintings which is still open to the public.
FONT-DE-GAUME CELLAR
There are more than 200 polychrome paintings in the caves. There are also engravings on the walls. There are also mammoths painted on the walls.
Located in the Ardèche department of southern France, you will see 50 drawings of horses, lions, and reindeer cavort across 49 feet of limestone wall. Chauvet Cave is about 1300 feet. The purpose behind the Chauvet Cave paintings is a mystery.

It's a cave which opens onto a hillside at Cabrerets in the Lot department of the Occitania region in France.
PECH MERLE CAVE
The cave is easy to access and can be entered by most people. The cave has been open to the public since 1926 and it is classified as a “Historic Monument".
The Padirac Chasm is a cave located near Gramat, in the Lot department, Occitanie region, France. Since the 1930s, visitors can access the cave system by descending 75 m by lift or stairs.
