Sand dunes are a beautiful creation of nature. Sand dunes make an exotic thing to look out for. The beautiful deserts decorated with some of the tallest sand dunes is where you must visit at least once in a lifetime.
Address this creation as mighty dunes or tall dunes – they are one and the same. Listed ahead are the highest sand dunes in the world that you must visit to see them live.
1. Duna Federico Kirbus, Argentina
This dune is mighty high – towering 4,035 feet or 1,230 meters respectively over the levels of land. The sand dune is located in Argentina, in Bolson de Fiambala of the town Fiambala.
Interestingly, this sand dune has been named after a journalist, Federico B. Kirbus, who happened to discover the same.
2. Cerro Blanco, Peru
Peru doesn’t fail to surprise you in terms of its beautiful natural spots and the Cerro Blanco is one of them. It is the second-highest sand dune in the world – 3,860 feet or 1, 176 meters high from the land. Located in the Nazca province, this sand dune is easy to reach.
3. Medanoso Dune, Chile
Visit the Atacama Desert, Chile and you will spot the beautiful golden Mendanoso Dune that is touted as the third tallest sand dune of the world. This sand dune is 1, 805 feet high.
Interestingly, you can adventure your heart out by doing sandboard here. Pro tip – carry some extra water as this area is very dry.
4. Rig-e Yalan Dune, Iran
When you begin your excursion to the Lut Desert in Kerman, Iran, you will find this sand dune that is about 1,542 feet high. This area itself is flanked by sand dunes and it looks beautiful aesthetically. NASA has also termed this place as one of the hottest places in the world.
5. Dune 7, Namibia
Dune 7 is 1,256 feet high and is located in the Namib Desert in Namibia.  
This sand dune is near the coast as well as in a desert and this fact surely makes it a place to be in for all the tourists and adventure enthusiasts. It has been named as Dune 7 because it is the seventh dune you will cross after passing River Tsauchab.
6. Mount Tempest, Australia
This is the only sand dune that has self-declared itself as a mountain. Mount Tempest is 920 feet high and is located on the Moreton Bay on the southeast coast of Queensland, Australia. This place is beautiful and a must-visit spot.
7. Star Dune, USA
You will find the beautiful Star Dune towering 720 feet in Colorado, USA. This sand dune is 8,950 feet high from the sea level. It is the biggest sand dune in North America. The name Star Dune has been given to this creation as the sand dune resembles the shape of the star.
8. Great Dune Of Pyla, France
This is the only sand dune of Europe on the list. Located on the Atlantic coastline of Southern France, this sand dune is 130 feet high from the land.
