How to Plan for Your RV Trip

Kevin Gardner
Whether you are a beginner RV traveler or a seasoned RVer, there are ways you can make the most out of your RV trip. Vacations are supposed to be filled with relaxation and fun. If you don’t have an organized trip, you may be more stressed than relaxed. Here is what you need to do to prepare for a calm, laidback RV trip.

Invest in Sleep

A comfortable bed helps you fall asleep faster and longer. Since comfort is subjective, it makes more sense to have a custom built mattress for your RV. In addition to the mattress, bedding is also a crucial element for a good night’s sleep. Choose bedding that is comfortable and will keep you at right temperature year-round.

Bring Along Entertainment

Even with long days of travel, you’ll no doubt want to stay entertained on your trip. Entertainment is important for everyone, but it’s particularly important if you have children. Bring games along on your trip. You may want to have a ball or frisbee to toss around when parked.
After all, spending time in the RV may give you more appreciation for outdoor activities. Books and board games are also a staple of RV travel. If you’re itching for an evening inside the RV, plan ahead with your favorite movies. You can have movie nights, even when you’re on the road.

Pack Practical Groceries

Before your trip, you need to plan what you’ll eat. Grocery runs can be extremely daunting, so it helps to have a list of what you’ll need. Be careful about deviating from the list! You want foods that you know how to prepare and that you know you and your family will eat.
Some beginner RVers spend too much money on food that goes waste. They don’t realize how much food they actually need. You usually do not have the typical fridge space in your RV. Keep that in mind when it comes to groceries because you don’t want anything to go bad while you’re on the road.

Create an Itinerary

For those who need organization, an itinerary may seem like an obvious inclusion. Itineraries provide structure to the trip. Without one, you may find it difficult to follow through with a schedule. Itineraries are crucial to time management. If you want to maximize your time, then you should have a schedule.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t have any spontaneity. If anything, an itinerary can provide you with a guide. Some days you may be cutting close on time, but other days you may have plenty to plan something else. An itinerary reminds you which days you can be more relaxed with and which days you need to stay on schedule.

Map Your Route

No matter if you want to have a structured trip or one filled with spontaneity, you probably should map out your route. When you map your route, you will be able to point the places you can stop for the night. You will be able to figure out which landmarks you hope to see.
To plan your route, you can use different methods. On one hand, you can use a road trip planning app to prepare your route. This is convenient and simple than preparing by hand. If you like to do things old fashioned way, you can always sit down with a map and begin your outline.

Enjoy the Trip!

Your RV vacation should give you ample relaxation. These tips can make the trip less overwhelming and allow you more room for spontaneity. Don’t let your vacation be burdened by external stress.
