The Atlantic hurricane season lies between June 1st and November 30th, the peak time being between mid August and late October. Though Florida is rarely hit by major hurricanes, it is best to prepare for the worst.
Cover Up Loose Ends
Embarking for Florida during hurricane season, without a travel insurance, is undoubtedly a fool’s errand. Purchase a travel insurance plan that will cover trip cancellation or delays, if any.
You Snooze, You Lose!
Don’t put off purchasing travel insurance till the eleventh hour. Keep in mind that once a hurricane is christened, you will not be eligible for storm-related coverage.
Keep an Eagle Eye
Stay up to date on the weather conditions on the days preceding your trip, in case you need to cancel due to inclement weather.
Knowledge is Power
Be informed about the cancellation and rescheduling policies of your airline and hotel in case of emergency, to avoid being stranded. Ask your hotel beforehand about their emergency procedures in the face of a hurricane.
Be a (Wo)Man With a Plan
If you are traveling with your family or in a large group, chalk out an emergency plan to meet the rest of the members at a particular venue, along with how to reach there. Find out the local hurricane shelters prior to the trip.
Pack an Arsenal
Have an emergency kit with a radio, flashlight, cash in both US and foreign currencies, a list of emergency contacts, water, non-perishable food, and other essentials.
Get Out of The Frying Pan (But Not Into the Fire)!
Acquaint yourself with Florida’s evacuation routes in case an emergency evacuation is ordered.
