Appalachian mountains are a group of ranges which run along the eastern coast of North America from Newfoundland, Canada to Alabama, USA.
These have been attracting tourists for centuries because of the rich biodiversity, mesmerizing rivers and enthralling beauty.
Geologically, Appalachian are the oldest mountain ranges in North America; these were formed some 480-million years.
And now the facts...
The Mountain range derives its name from the Apalachees—Indian tribes who Inhabit the region.
Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain of the range. It is also the highest point in eastern North America.
It is named after Dr. Mitchell, the scientist who went to the mountain to measure its height accurately but died unfortunately in a fall. There is also a National Park here named after him.
Its Mount Washington peak with an altitude of 1,916 metres is known for its extreme weather conditions. It experiences hurricane winds at the summit for about 100 days in a year.
The Big Walker Mounts Tunnel is a 1.2 km long vehicular tunnel in the mountain ranges; it was inaugurated in 1972.
In winters, the ranges get covered in snow and become a recreational spot for skiing and other fun activities.
The world famous Appalachian trail is the longest hiking trail in the world, covering a distance of 3500 km; it stretches from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine.
The Appalachian valley is considered to be blessed with the most fertile soils of United States. The valley extends from Newfoundland in Canada to Alabama, USA.
