In Seattle, where art seems to flow in the very air of the city, music and science fiction come together in an audacious manner at the Museum of Pop Culture.
Ishwari Pamu
It’s a 140,000 sq. ft. building and was founded in the year 2000 by Microsoft’s co-founder Paul Allen as a non-profit museum.
Frank Gehry designed the structure which looks like it’s wrapped in undulating metallic sheets of myriad bold hues and textures.
The museum, initially known as Experience Music Project, has changed its name five times since its inception, and finally decided on “Museum of Pop Culture” in the 2016.
The entire structure resembles a smashed guitar and the locals called it “the blob”.
Experience the virtual world of Minecraft brought to life with life-size creatures, audio effects, and a day-night lighting cycle setup in celebration of the 10th anniversary.
Minecraft: The Exhibition
The exhibits “Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses” and “Wild Blue Angel: Hendrix Abroad” are tributes to the legendary musicians from Seattle, Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix.
Bowie by Mick Rock
There is an entire exhibit dedicated to David Bowie which included 65 large frame pictures of the singer by Mike Rock, Bowie’s official photographer, 2 exhibit films and more.
Prince from Minneapolis
This exhibit reviews the singer’s influence on other artists and fans. It includes 25 photos of Prince, a guitar, official shots from the Purple Rain concert by Nancy Bundt and so much more. This one is worth visiting, because who doesn’t like Prince!
Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds
In honor of the franchise’s 50th anniversary, this exhibition has more than 100 artifacts and costumes used in the TV series and spin-offs, including 6-foot U.S.S. Enterprise filming model used in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Whatever happened to Marty's hoverboard from Back to the Future: Part II or Star War’s Death Star model? Or Sir Lancelot’s helmet from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or the Sting, Aragorn’s Anduril, Gimli’s axe and Saruman’s staff from LOTR? It’s all here!
Sound Lab
Explore samplers, effect pedals, drums, electric guitars, and keyboards to unleash your inner musician. Perform in front of a virtual audience and dive into the world of rock 'n' roll.
The exhibitions, Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction, Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, Indie Game Revolution, and Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic, are the coolest.
The Seattle Center Monorail runs right through the building.
The museum sits right beside the famous Seattle Space Needle. Though the museum is just 3 floors, it packs in quite a lot.
