Plan a Day Trip to Karlstejn Castle From Prague

Vineetha Rao Suravajjala
Pretty high on the list of must-do activities in Prague, the Karlstejn Castle is one of the most popular single day getaways, just within an hour from the city!

But What Is It, You Ask?

The Karlstejn Castle is a large Gothic castle founded by Charles IV, the King of Bohemia in the 14th Century.
Because it is a rather short distance from Prague, you can either drive or take a train to get to Karlstejn Castle.

Pro tip: Take the train! Don’t fall asleep though, you’ll miss some gorgeous views of the country side!
It is a walk up from the train station to the castle, so wear comfortable shoes when you go there! Once you get to the castle, buy the tickets for a day tour there.
There are several places to stop, to take a break along the way, both for street food and even sit-down restaurants. Don’t miss a great opportunity to sample some of the delicious Czech.

The Castle's Appeal

It was built as a treasury to hold the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire and has seen several renovations over the past few centuries. Because parts of the castle are open to the public, you can see the wonderful architecture up-close!
Also adding to the appeal is the fact that the Karlstejn Castle sits in the middle of a forested area, making it a great place to snap the postcard-photos!
Don’t forget to take in the gem encrusted walls, panel paintings and the replica of the coronation crown as you explore this large gothic castle!

Tours and More

There are a couple of tours of the Karlstejn Castle to choose from, of varying lengths and highlighting different aspects of the castle. Once you’ve checked the time and language of the tour, it is a good idea to plan ahead and book in advance.

Pro-tip

The castle’s opening and closing times vary based on season and time of year. Double-check dates before travelling!

Wait! There’s More!

Your trip to Karlstejn Castle doesn’t have to end with the Castle itself… walk around and explore the charming village that surrounds the castle for souvenirs!
