Overlooking the scenic city of Rio de Janerio, the statue excluding its 8 metre pedestal stands tall at 30 metres and has a width of 28- metres. The statue faces East and the two arms point to the North & South respectively.

The actual statue was first made in France by the French sculptor Paul Landowski into clay pieces. These were then shipped to Brazil to be remade by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and French engineer Albert Caquot.

The statue was built using reinforced concrete and has an outer shell of 6 million soapstone tiles. The light-colored stone used to build the statue was taken from a quarry near the city of Ouro Preto.

Cool Fact
As the statue is located on top of Mount Corcovado, it experiences 3 to 5 lightning strikes every year. However, in 2008 and 2014 the lightning strike broke off parts of the statue’s fingers and damaged the head.
