Lesotho (pronounced le-soo-too) is a mountainous country with a mostly agrarian population. It is also entirely inclaved inside South Africa. It is the only country outside Europe to be surrounded entirely by another country.
The other two countries that are entirely inclaved are Vatican City and San Marino, both surrounded by Italy. However, Lesotho is much bigger than both of them. It is almost 500 times the size of San Marino.
Unfortunately, like many other African countries, Lesotho is disease-ridden. A quarter of the population is HIV-infected which means Lesotho has the second highest rate of HIV infection in the world after Eswatini.
Lesotho also has one of the highest rape rate in the world. This is mainly due to lack of education among the population about women's rights.
Lesotho is located entirely high up in the mountains. It is the only country to be entirely 1,000 metres above sea level. In fact, it is mostly above 1,800 metres.
The lowest point in Lesotho is 1,400 metres above sea level, which makes it the 'highest lowest' point of any country in the world.
A dinosaur was named after the country. The fossils of the Lesothosaurus were found buried here and so the dinosaur was named after Lesotho.
Lesotho is one of the only nations in the world where the literacy rate among women is higher than the men.
The local people, known as Basotho wear blankets, known as Basotho blankets to protect them from the cold. This Basotho blanket inspired many of the shawls in Marvel's Black Panther.
At the Matekana Air Strip, one of the airports in Lesotho, the runway is exceptionally short, only 400 metres long. What's more, at the end stands a cliff 610 metres high which the plane has to clear.
