Things to See and Do in Guadeloupe

Ishwari Pamu Mar 23, 2024
An archipelago of tiny islands, its main duo looks like a butterfly and thanks to the blue Caribbean Sea, it seems as though it has spread its wings and is floating under a clear blue sky. It's the perfect place if you want to go off the grid and spend some me time. Here are a few things to do while you're here.
The main reason why people visit the Guadeloupe island - its inconceivably beautiful postcard beaches. The turquoise blue waters, the briny scent of old sea and the gentle sound of the waves provide the much needed detox from the city life.
The Beaches
The island has around 190 miles of coastline and over 200 beaches! While visiting all of them is practically impossible, you shouldn't miss the Plage Petit Havre, Plage des Amandiers, Plage du Souffleur, and the black sand beach of Malendure.

The main island is split into two parts - Basse Terre (left side) and the Grande Terre (right side) and both have something different to offer. Given it's geographical location, the views, as you can imagine, are unbelievably spectacular. Pointe des Chateaux, Pointe de la Grande Vigie and Pointe Batterie ou Pointe Deshaies are a must-visit.
The Viewpoints
Food
The island has a long-standing rich history and the food reflects it. A delicious mix of Caribbean, French and African cuisine, the food is a treat for your taste buds. Do not leave the island without trying the Bokit, coconut sorbet and the sword fish brochette.
Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve
Marine life of the Caribbean Sea and several wrecked ships at this internationally acclaimed diving spot in Basse Terre. This is where Jacques Cousteau's "The Silent World" was filmed.

Guadeloupe National Park
It has 74,100 acres of rainforest in the Basse Terre! Go for a hike and explore the unique biodiversity of the island, bathe under the La Cascade aux Écrevisses or take in the spectacular views of the gushing Carbet Waterfalls.
A memorial dedicated to the global history and dark period of slavery, the suffering and hardship seen by the indigenous people of the island, and the slaves who were brought to the island from Africa.

Pointe-a-Pitre
The largest town in Guadeloupe, it's been the island's commercial hub for more than 4 centuries. With shops selling everything from French perfume, jewelry, crystals, flowers, spices, crafts and more, it's the best place to shop for souvenirs.
Cocoa Museum
Yes, the island has its own chocolate! Visit the Maison du Cacao to learn how the exclusive Guadeloupe chocolate is made and taste the different chocolates at the museum.
Hiking and Trekking
If you have an adventurous streak, leave the beaches and set out to explore the island's wilderness. See if you can hike the tallest mountain la Grande Soufrière, which is also an active volcano. There are several other hiking trails if hiking this mountain seems like a lot to you.
Rum
Just in case, the islands, beaches, waterfalls, rainforest, food and the chocolates weren't impressive enough, they have their own rum too! In fact, rum is so common there that it's served by the bottle and not in a glass.
There are several rum distilleries on the island and the tasting tour is one of the best things you can do in Guadeloupe.

Sailing Into the Sunset
Spend a day exploring the Botanical Gardens of Deshales and in the evening you can catch one of the sunset cruises at the Grand-Anse Beach, learn how to sail a boat and sail into the sunset. Yes, just like in the movies.
