Things to Do and See in Koper, Slovenia

Koper city is home to many medieval and early-renaissance monuments. Being a port city of Slovenia, tourists mostly arrive here by cruise liner.

There are day trips by cruise from Koper to various points of attractions such as Lake Bled, Piran, and Ljubljana.

At the center of the old town stands the Bell Tower at 54 m high. It was originally a Roman fortification. In the 15th and 16th centuries the tower was transformed to what you see today.

Skocjan Caves is a popular natural cave system formed by the Reka River. Skocjan Caves was listed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1986.

Rock formation are mainly Stalactites, and Stalagmites. In 1999, the cave was listed in the Ramsar Directory of Wetlands of International Importance.

Located in the southwest Slovenia, it is the 15th-century Venetian Gothic Praetorian Palace, an architectural icon of Koper.

The palace was open to the public in late 20th century.  Today it serves as the Tourist Information Center and mayor's office.

The cathedral originally dates back to the 12th century. It has the Gothic architecture on the lower half and Renaissance designs on the upper half.

Inside the church is the alterpiece by  Vittore Carpaccio "Madonna with Child on the Throne of Saints."

Later in the 18th century, the interior of the church was redecorated by Giorgio Massari, an Italian architect.

Koper Beach is a pebble beach with no sand. There are lawns around for sunbathing and there is a enclosed area for swimming.

The museum is housed in the Belgramoni-Tacco Palace. It exhibits the artifacts, paintings, statues, folk instruments of the Venetian as well as the Renaissance period.
