One of the best ways to check which countries are the cleanest in the world is by looking into the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), a project developed by Yale University and Columbia University.
The EPI index considers various criteria such as air quality, water, sanitation, forests, climate change, as well as other key factors.
Based on the data collected in 2020, here’s a list of top 10 cleanest countries in the world.
#1. Switzerland
Switzerland is crowned as the cleanest country in the world.
Known for its thick forests, wildlife, as well as safe and clean water and an EPI of 87.42, Switzerland is one of the best tourists' dreamlands.
#2. France
The second cleanest country in the world with an EPI score of 83.95, France is another hit tourist destination.
The top three most popular attractions in France include The Louvre Museum, the Eiffel Tower, and the Palace of Versailles. Disneyland is another major attraction here.
#3. Denmark
Third position in the list is again bagged by an European Nation. Denmark with an EPI score of 81.60, is also the 2nd happiest country in the world.
Tourism here includes, Europe’s oldest functioning tower and observatory, also Tivoli Gardens, the second oldest amusement park in the world. Denmark is also the least corrupt country in the world.
#4. Malta
Malta ranks fourth in the list of cleanest countries in the world with an EPI score of 80.90. An interesting fact to know is that Malta neither has forests nor rivers across the country’s seven islands.

This small European country, surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany is on the 7th position in the list. It has an EPI score of 79.12
