Top 10 Things to Do in the Alfama District of Lisbon

This densely packed Lisbon neighborhood is balanced on a sloping patch of land that leads to the river Tejo estuary. A perfect blend of beauty, culture, and fun - Alfama offers a microcosm of the Lisbon city experience.

So picturesque is Alfama, that there are designated viewpoints (Miradouros) dotted around the area, offering beautiful views of the terracotta rooftops that make up the cityscape.
Ride the historic yellow Tram No. 28. It's best to leave cars behind, for Alfama's narrow streets.
At times, walking up the steep streets of the hilly parts of Alfama might prove to be challenging. You can opt for a Segway tour of the area's landmarks.

The Alfama backstreets are best explored on foot. Wander around, get lost in the maze of cobblestoned alleyways, and keep an eye out for gorgeous Azulejos (decorative tile-work).
Check out the tailor-made photo ops at each of the amazing city viewpoints, some of which double as rooftop belvederes: Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Santo Estêvão.
Strolling the Alfama streets, you'll find this church which stands out from the stunning backdrop: the Lisbon Cathedral.
As the birthplace of Fado music, Alfama has a special treat in store for music-lovers. Catch live music shows at restaurants or check out the street performers. There's also the Fado Museum to visit.

All the other Miradouros offer unique vantage points, but it's tough to beat the highest one: Castelo de Sao Jorge. It's a medieval moorish-style citadel.
Those with a sweet tooth shouldn't miss out on Lisbon's iconic custard egg tarts - a confection which has been perfected in some of Alfama's trendy cafes.
The Alfama district originated as a fishing village, so it's no surprise that some of Portugal's tastiest cod fish recipes and dishes are served here. Have your fill of the variety of Portuguese seafood.
