Mozambique, a country in South Africa, made news in the past because of Civil War and its destruction. But, it is now renowned as a top tourist destination because of its tropical islands, secluded beaches, amazing national parks, and the delicious cuisine.
1. The Serene Beaches
The region has a coastline of over 2500 km. The white-sand beaches here are unspoiled treasures with several dunes, palm trees, and amazing view of the Indian Ocean.
The Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelago offer some of the best beach destinations. Island hopping is also famous near the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Some of the famous beaches are Chidenguele, Tofo, Barra, Ponta do Ouro, Pomene.
2. Water Sports
Mozambiue is renowned for its diving sites. The reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago boast of almost 1200 marine creatures including the rare Dugong or Sea Cow.
The warm water and limited currents make it suitable even for beginners. You may get a chance to actually see dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and even humpback whales in the waters here.
Ponto do Ouro is famous for a place where you can swim with dolphins. It’s also famous amongst surfers.
The Quirimbas Islands are also famous for diving, snorkeling, and fishing activities.
It’s famous for Deep Sea fishing and a few fishing games are also held here.
Apart from the archipelagos, the Mozambique Channel is famous for populations of Marlin, Tuna and SailFish.
3. The Delicious Seafood
Thanks to the coast, there is plenty of fresh seafood found here! The food is renowned and you may notice the Portuguese influence making it interesting and flavorsome.
One renowned dish is the peri-peri shrimp or prawn. Matata, a local seafood stew, is made with clams in a peanut sauce.
Not just seafood, their whole cuisine is filled with surprises.
4. Exquisite Wildlife
The country has varied landscapes featuring animals like antelopes, elephants, cheetahs, hyenas, and lions.
The Marromeu National Park is a coastal reserve with abundant birdlife like flamingo and other water birds.
Rare birds like African Skimmer and Wattled Crane can be seen with other migratory birds.
5. Natural Beauty
The Gorongosa National Park is one of the wildest parks in Africa, which give you a chance to experience the ultimate wilderness. It boasts of abundant wildlife, limestone gorges, and woodlands.

6. Interesting History and Culture
Ibo Island, Maputo, and Paquitequete are some of the places where you can see the historical treasures, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, fortress, cemeteries, colonial-era mansions, and Swahili traditions.
The country also has some really interesting past stories. The Ibo Island and Ilha de Mozambique have fascinating stories from the past which include gold mining, slaves, and pirates.
7. Stunning Artwork
Mozambique has loads of beautiful artwork, especially in the northern regions. The sculptures and crafts were made by the Makonde people.
The art also depicts the history about the civil war and independence; and focus on the traditional beliefs.
8. Traditional Music and Dance
The region is also known for its traditional music and dance. The marimba bands and modern Mozambican music is renowned.
The mapiko dance of the Makonde people, ‘hopping dance’ of the Makua, and ‘hunting dace’ of the Chopi are some of the varied dance forms; each beautiful in its own way.
