Travel Guide to Hvar Island, Croatia

Located in Croatia and surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Hvar island is a popular and famous summer resort. Major attractions include beautiful beaches, the port town's 13th century walls, Hvar Cathedral and a hilltop fortress.

Dubovica Beach

The beach is pretty and secluded. Here you get to wade in the clear and blue Adriatic sea. The hike to get to the beach is truly worth it.

Pakleni Islands

An archipelago of more than 20 islands, Pakleni islands are a nature lover's paradise. Popular activities here include snorkeling and kayaking. A must see is the famous Carpe Diem Beach Club at Marinkovac.

Stari Grad Hvar

This lays claim to be the island's first ever settlement. Here you will find old stone houses and cobblestone streets. A popular attraction here is the 16th-century Tvrdalj Castle.

Hvar Town

The most prominent town of the island offers a vibrant nightlife, world class accommodation and great places to eat and drink. Interesting places to visit include historical buildings and cultural monuments.

Starigrad Plains

This fertile area has been cultivated for thousands of years. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The produce includes grapes, olives and other vegetables.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

The popular cathedral boasts of a grand square renaissance bell tower. There is a vast and beautiful collection of renaissance art here. The church is also famous for a Venetian artwork of Madonna and Child.

Boat trip to the Blue and Green Caves

The two caves are a must-see for tourists. In the Green Cave the sun's rays result in the cave look emerald green. The Blue Cave is famous for it's neon appearance also caused by the sun's rays.

Spanjola Fortress

The popular Venetian fortress was built in the 16th century. Interesting things to see include the tunnels, walls and towers of the castle which are still in good condition. A must-see are the historic artefacts inside the fortress.

Dine in a Deserted village

Much of the island is deserted and dining in such areas is a unique experience. Food is prepared over an open flame as there is no electricity.

Nearby airports are the Split and Dubrovnik airports. Tourists can reach the island by boat or ferry.
